Better Intimate
♀ Women’s Health

Sexual health through perimenopause and menopause

Menopause changes more than periods. Many women notice lower desire, dryness, discomfort during sex or a different relationship with their body, and few feel able to talk about it. Midlife can still be a time of rich, satisfying intimacy, often with a few adjustments.

What changes, and why

As oestrogen falls, vaginal tissue becomes thinner and less elastic and produces less natural lubrication. That can make sex uncomfortable or painful, which understandably lowers desire. Hot flushes and night sweats disrupt sleep. Mood changes, weight changes and midlife stress (teenagers, ageing parents, careers) add to the load.

Common concerns

  • Pain or burning during penetration
  • Needing longer to become aroused
  • Feeling “switched off” or less sexual
  • Partner misunderstanding changes as rejection
  • Body-image worries

Frequently asked questions

Water- or silicone-based lubricants during sex and regular vaginal moisturisers help many women. A gynaecologist can discuss medical options, such as local oestrogen, if needed.

Absolutely. Many women report satisfying, sometimes better, sex after menopause, especially without fear of pregnancy.
