Low sex drive in men, understood and treated

Men are expected to “always be in the mood”, so losing interest in sex can feel confusing and even shameful. In reality, low desire in men is common, and it almost always has understandable causes.

Desire is not a switch

Desire rises and falls with your life. A new baby, a demanding job, grief, weight gain, poor sleep or a relationship that has become more about chores than closeness can all turn it down. Low libido becomes a concern when it lasts, when it causes distress, or when it creates distance between you and your partner.

Common causes of low libido in men

  • Stress and burnout, which keep the body in survival mode.
  • Depression and anxiety, and some medicines used to treat them.
  • Relationship problems, including conflict, resentment or feeling criticised.
  • Performance worries. If sex has become associated with ED or PE, the mind may avoid it altogether.
  • Physical health, such as low testosterone, thyroid disease, diabetes, obesity, alcohol and sleep apnoea.

What therapy involves

We start by understanding your desire history, your health and your relationship. You will learn the difference between spontaneous and responsive desire, how to protect time and energy for intimacy, and how to talk about sex without it becoming a fight. When helpful, couples sessions reduce the chase-and-avoid cycle many partners fall into.

How Better Intimate helps

Look at the whole picture

Sleep, stress, mood, body, relationship and habits. Low desire is rarely just one thing.

Rebuild responsive desire

Learn how desire often follows arousal, not the other way round, and how to create the conditions for it.

Repair the relationship side

Communication tools that reduce pressure and resentment around sex.

Know when to test

We tell you when blood tests for testosterone, thyroid or diabetes are sensible.

Frequently asked questions

No. Testosterone matters, but stress, depression, relationship issues and exhaustion are far more common causes. A blood test is useful if you also have fatigue, low mood or reduced morning erections.

For some men, frequent pornography use makes partnered sex feel less exciting. It is not true for everyone, and we explore it without judgement.

Some people find certain natural products supportive, but evidence is mixed. We may suggest options where appropriate, alongside proven psychological approaches, and never as a substitute for medical care.

This page is for education and is not a medical diagnosis. Better Intimate provides psychosexual counselling and does not prescribe medicines; we will suggest a medical check whenever one is needed.
