Low sexual desire in women, with compassion

Many women quietly wonder whether something is wrong with them because they rarely want sex, or because desire has faded since marriage, children or midlife. Low desire is one of the most common concerns we see, and it is very rarely a sign that you are “broken”.

How desire really works

Popular culture shows desire as something that appears out of nowhere. For many women, especially in long-term relationships, desire is responsive: it appears after closeness, touch or arousal has begun, not before. If you have been waiting to “feel like it” first, you may have concluded that your desire has disappeared, when in fact it simply needs a different starting point.

Common reasons desire fades

  • Mental load and exhaustion, from work, home, children or caring for parents
  • Relationship issues, such as feeling unheard, criticised or taken for granted
  • Pain or discomfort during sex, which teaches the body to avoid it
  • Hormonal changes after childbirth, while breastfeeding, with some contraceptives and around menopause
  • Body image, low mood, anxiety or past negative sexual experiences
  • Lack of pleasure. If sex has rarely been satisfying, there is little to look forward to

How we help

We start by listening to your story without judgement. Then we look at the brakes and accelerators in your life: what shuts desire down, and what helps it grow. Therapy may include education, mindfulness, communication tools, sensate focus with a partner, and addressing pain or medical issues with the right specialist.

How Better Intimate helps

Understand your desire

Learn the difference between spontaneous and responsive desire, which changes how many women see themselves.

Remove what gets in the way

Pain, exhaustion, resentment and body worries all act like brakes. We work on them one by one.

Build what helps

Create the conditions, emotional and physical, in which desire can grow.

Include your partner

Couples sessions reduce pressure and help both of you understand what is really happening.

Frequently asked questions

Very. Exhaustion, role changes, lack of privacy and hormonal shifts commonly lower desire. It is a signal to adjust, not a failure.

Some women notice changes with hormonal contraception. It is worth discussing with your gynaecologist, especially if the change began after starting a new method.

Not at all. Many women come simply wanting to understand themselves better, or to reduce conflict with a partner.

This page is for education and is not a medical diagnosis. Better Intimate provides psychosexual counselling and does not prescribe medicines; we will suggest a medical check whenever one is needed.
