Vaginismus treatment, gentle and at your pace

Vaginismus can make you feel broken, especially when it affects a new marriage or your hopes of starting a family. You are not broken. Vaginismus is a well-understood, highly treatable condition, and most women overcome it with the right, gentle approach.

What is happening in vaginismus

The muscles around the vaginal opening tighten automatically when penetration is expected, much like an eyelid blinking when something comes near the eye. You are not doing it on purpose, and trying harder usually makes it worse. The reflex is often fuelled by fear: fear of pain, of tearing, of bleeding, or of the unknown.

Why it develops

  • Little or frightening sex education, or messages that sex is shameful
  • A painful first attempt, examination or medical procedure
  • Anxiety in general, or specifically about the wedding night
  • Past sexual trauma
  • Sometimes no clear reason at all

How treatment works

We begin with education and reassurance, then teach relaxation and breathing. From there, a graded programme helps your body learn that touch and penetration can be safe, one small step at a time, always under your control. We often work alongside a pelvic-floor physiotherapist and include your partner so progress happens without pressure.

How Better Intimate helps

Understand your body

Knowing exactly what happens in the muscles takes away much of the fear.

Calm the fear response

Breathing, relaxation and CBT reduce the automatic panic that tightens muscles.

Gradual, gentle steps

A graded programme, fully in your control, often including dilators and pelvic-floor physiotherapy.

Support for your partner

Helping partners understand, remove pressure and stay close throughout.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. With a gradual, supportive approach, the large majority of women achieve comfortable penetration.

Neither. Vaginismus is an automatic protective reflex, not a choice and not a relationship failure.

Sessions are conversations. Any exercises are done privately, at your own pace, and you are always in control.

It can make conception difficult if penetration is not possible. Many couples seek help for this reason, and treatment often resolves it.

This page is for education and is not a medical diagnosis. Better Intimate provides psychosexual counselling and does not prescribe medicines; we will suggest a medical check whenever one is needed.
